INAUGURATION
CEREMONY FOR PPMS LAB EQUIPMENT, ACQUIRED
JOINTLY BY UNIVERSIDAD DEL VALLE AND THE
CENTER OF EXCELLENCE FOR NOVEL MATERIALS
– CENM
Date: June 27/2007
Place: Faculty of Science, Room
1026
Time: 4 PM
PPMS (Physical Properties Measurement
System) – Lab equipment used in
measuring physical properties. This equipment
can physically characterize materials
within a temperature range from 1.9 to
400 Kelvin, and magnetic fields up to
7 Tesla. It permits carrying out electrical,
magnetic, and thermal measurements, both
in materials as in electronic or magnetic
devices developed. This equipment is the
only one of its kind in the nation, and
in Latin America only a few institutions
have the system.
Previously, when groups
at Universidad del Valle needed this type
of sample analysis, they needed to resort
to international contacts in Europe and
the United States, but due to the high
demand for these services abroad, very
often our groups could not make a complete
study of the samples. Through the acquisition
of the PPMS, the research groups at Universidad
del Valle and the groups participating
with CENM will have more autonomy in the
quantity and type of characterization
of the samples, which translates to savings
in time and money.
The purchase of this robust high-technology
laboratory equipment seeks to benefit
not only the groups at Universidad del
Valle and those groups participating
with CENM, but also to offer its services
to other academic and trade entities
involved in the research and development
of new materials and the devices or
other applications related to these.
With the acquisition of the PPMS, we
will broaden the spectrum of projects
with other national and international
entities, as well as drawing cooperation
agreements with entities that are complementary
to our research endeavor.
